The Most Important Lesson Tim Cook Learned From Steve Jobs: “Focus Is Key” (Alexia Tsotsis/TechCrunch)
In the first major public interview since replacing Steve Jobs as CEO, Tim Cook took the stage with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the tenth annual All Things D conference to talk about the state of Apple. âApple has gone through a tremendous change,â Walt Mossberg segued into perhaps the most important question of the interview, âHow is Apple different with you as the CEO?â
âI learned a lot a from Steve,â Cook responded. âIt was the saddest day of my life when he passed away. As much as you should see or predict that I really didnât. Itâs time to get on.â
Cook said that he most admired Jobsâ âintense determinationâ and described him as âlaser-focused.â Cook also explained that the most important leadership lesson he learned from Jobs is that  ââFocus is keyâ .. not just in running your company but in your personal life. You can only do certain things well.â
âSteve was good at not accepting things âgoodâ or âvery goodâ but only âthe very bestâ,â Cook went on, describing Appleâs competitive advantage in cultivating culture of excellence . âItâs so unique that Iâm not going to witness or permit the change of it,â Cook said.
When Mossberg pressed him on this point, implying that it belied a unwillingness to change, Cook said no, âI love museums but Iâm not going to live in one,â saying that another thing he learned from Jobs (who spoke two years ago on the very same stage) was to not focus on the past.
Referring to how Disney executivess woud always ask âWhat would Walt do?â when making decisions, Jobs told Cook to never ask âWhat would Steve Jobs do?â âJust do what you like,â Jobs apparently advised, surprisingly enough.
Moving on to (even softer) matters, Cook also brought up another philosophical Jobs maxim, âThe joy is in the journey.â âLife is fragile,â Cook said, âWeâre not guaranteed a tomorrow so give it everything youâve got.â
